After winning the 2024 Presidential Election pretty handedly, President-elect Donald Trump promised to impose tariffs on foreign countries such as China, Mexico and Canada. This means we would have no more unfair trading practices, and in some cases, protect our national security. However, the problem that has been on many Americans’ minds is inflation.
The prices of goods skyrocketed during the Biden administration. With tariffs, there is the fear of prices increasing and families unable to put food on the table. This is fair, but it’s better to solve multiple problems than just one.
The President-elect promises to impose additional 10% tariffs on China, along with additional 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Trump wants to enforce these tariffs and possibly continue this until they address the movement of drugs and undocumented immigrants into America.
Illegal immigration and the fentanyl crisis are just two of the many reasons why the U.S is currently upside down. We have been putting foreign countries first and America last. Illegal substances like fentanyl have entered America through air and express couriers, destroying many people’s lives. With the help of tariffs, our drug crisis could possibly be solved.
Going back to the 2024 presidential election, one of the top issues American citizens voted on was immigration. Over 61% of people voted that there is something wrong with our immigration system and the facts support this.
From 2018-2020, there were just over 13,000 criminal noncitizens entering the U.S. In 2024 alone, 17,048 criminal noncitizens crossed the border. Now, this is mainly from Mexico who is in need of outside support; however, if Mexico is also going to allow undocumented immigrants to come in illegally, why help them?
Right now, putting pressure on other countries is the way to go, and this upcoming administration seems to be doing the right thing. However, the American people could still be hurting.
These tariffs could result in inflation skyrocketing again, as tariffs are known to increase consumer prices. We see mainstream news stations like CBS telling people what to buy before the Trump tariffs kick in, but this seems a little extreme; it’s like telling people to prepare for war. The tariffs won’t be permanent, and will change frequently due to the government passing laws or entering trade negotiations.
Overall, these tariffs are rightfully a worry to families who have been struggling financially over the past few years, but this isn’t permanent. This is to help improve our national security, immigration system, and stop illegal drugs from entering our country. These issues shouldn’t be a worry any more once this next administration takes over. Of course inflation is a worry for most Americans, but things only get worse before getting any better.
