Christmas is viewed as one of the most magical times of the year. Dazzling lights, gleaming streamers, and colorful decorations fill the exterior of many homes. However, when should families begin their decorating frenzy?
“Christmas comes only once a year,” but that particular ‘time’ is debatable as some students may start decorating as early as October. Some families celebrate especially early because of cultural traditions. Filipinos for instance will add a tree to their homes in August, ringing in the fall with holiday cheer. The reason for other families’ early decorations may simply be for ease, or the necessity of a lengthy Christmas. There’s undoubtedly a solid line between times that would seem reasonable, compared to those which seem preposterous. Charter’s students and staff know exactly when to adorn their homes.
“I think the earliest you should really start decorating for Christmas is Thanksgiving break. That’s a really perfect time to start decorating for Christmas because then you start getting the most out of your decorations. It’s just more convenient; it’s not too early. The start of November is too early because we’re still in a Halloween-y mood, appreciating fall.” -Maria Valentina Cabrice, Sophomore
“Anytime in October is ridiculously early. Christmas season officially starts November 1st. November is a Christmas month except for the week of Thanksgiving, where it reverts to fall. Afterwards, it’s Christmas again.” –Anabelle Caballero, Junior
“I think the earliest to decorate would be during Thanksgiving break. After that, my husband and I go all out. During the holidays he decorates the whole front of the house, the front yard, and everything. He loves it when other people get started decorating too.” -Mrs. Altimore, AICE General Paper Teacher
“People should start celebrating after Thanksgiving. That’s the perfect time. I feel like November should only be a time for fall, for Thanksgiving. December is for Christmas, leave November for Thanksgiving.” -Drew Santos, Junior
“The earliest time I start decorating is around mid-November. I feel like November is kind of a filler month; a transition between fall and winter. People are still hung up on Halloween but also waiting for Christmas. Nothing really happens in November so you insert other holidays into the month.” -Sofia Peralta, Senior
“I think the earliest is the end of February. Let’s say, Christmas ends, and then you want to experience a month after. You are just so excited that you can’t wait for next year’s Christmas. If Christmas is always in your mind, you’re just going to celebrate it all year long because you can’t wait for it to actually happen again.” –Martin Alvarez-Carrera, Sophomore
“ I’m Jewish so I don’t have as much of a say, but I think late October is the earliest. I see a lot of people decorating by that time. I know that we have a whole month, November. Besides Thanksgiving though, there isn’t much to expect before December. No one really cares about Thanksgiving either.” -Enzo Rabines, Junior
“My family starts decorating in November, but super early. I think people should start earlier because Christmas is the best time of the year and it brings a lot of joy. When I decorate early, it just makes me feel happy. I sort of like Thanksgiving because it makes me thankful, but Christmas is better.” -Gracie Mortman, Sophomore
“I think it’s never too early to start decorating or celebrating Christmas because it brings so much happiness and joy. Even though some people don’t like Christmas, I feel like everyone should love Christmas. Even if you don’t celebrate it, you gotta love the weather and how happy everyone is.” Leah Noriega, Sophomore
As said by Noriega, no matter how or what jags celebrate, they can all enjoy the temporary chill that saunters through the Gulf Coast. The decorations are a special addition to the festive atmosphere.
