Pembroke Pines Charter’s well-established DECA club is excited to show new and returning members the business world. DECA is a nonprofit organization aiming to teach students about management and entrepreneurial skills. The club offers workshops, volunteer opportunities, and even trips year-round.
DECA’s 2024-2025 Co-President, Senior William Peeters, has a deep-rooted passion for entrepreneurship. “I’ve always seen business as a skill that no matter what you pursue in life you’ll eventually need,” he says. Peeters stresses that entrepreneurship is a universal skill that extends beyond the business and management fields: “I was interested in learning about [entrepreneurship] while also growing my speaking skills since coming into the club, I was really shy. Now, I’m definitely more outgoing and social.” Similarly, Sophomore Alisha Lenka, the club’s Vice President of Marketing states “[I] was interested in DECA for the opportunity to develop hands-on business skills and contribute to the club’s growth through a leadership role in marketing.”
In terms of the club’s goals, Peeters says, “I want DECA to gain more members and have more people compete so we can introduce the rest of our school into the world of business.” He is hopeful that each member will step out of their comfort zone and expand DECA’s endless possibilities as a club.
As for Lenka, “My goals this year are to increase student engagement, spotlight member achievements, and focus on winning awards in competitions to strengthen DECA in our school.” As it is her first year as an officer, Lenka plans to enhance the experience for new and returning members and make business a fun skill for everyone.
Moreover, DECA also has many surprises in store for the school year. “Students should look out for our business pitch competition, social events, and the competitions themselves,” Lenka expressed. While DECA may be an educational club, its officers have managed to make it a very memorable experience for all.
Peeters adds, “We’re hoping to be open to more members going on our [annual] Tampa trip next year, so if they’re interested, definitely stay updated with our Instagram to see more.” This trip in Tampa is where the club’s state competition is held, in which members are tested on their entrepreneurial, hospitality, and marketing skills along with other factors of being in business.
This year’s DECA board is thrilled to continue and expand the business community at Charter. Between management and entrepreneurship, DECA is a staple club for not only those who want to major in business, but for everyone who aims to be a leader.
