Queen of Tejano Music. Revolutionary. Inspiring artist. Those are only a few of the words that the world uses to describe the one and only, Selena Quintanilla. Quintanilla, who was famously known as “Selena,” is famous for her contributions to music in the latino community and for her kindness. However, after making music for 14 years alongside her family, Selena was shot and killed in her hometown, Corpus Christi, Texas.
Her death shook the globe as she was just about to break barriers in the music industry and make an album in English that would later go hand in hand with her other Spanish albums. As young as Selena was when she died, her laughter, energy, and impact on all she touched was never forgotten. Decades after her horrific passing, Selena is still remembered. During the last week of October, President Joe Biden presented the 2022 and 2023 National Medal of Arts to Selena.
The National Medal of Arts is one of the most prestigious awards one can receive to artists by the federal government. It speaks volumes about Selena’s character and work in the music industry that she was chosen for this award even after her passing 30 years before. Her sister, one of the people she was closest to, Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga, accepted the award on her behalf. This is only one of the few things she does to keep her sister’s legacy alive. She works on tv shows, movies, books, and events that engage all of Selena’s loyal fans and keeps her love and passion for the arts alive.
But, the main question arises: why is Selena so loved and cherished by both latino and non-latino communities? Selena’s courage to bring two worlds together as a latina living in the United States in her music was what differentiated herself from any Latin music artist to date. Through her music, she mixed genres of pop music and Mariachi into her songs which ultimately helped create a larger fan base. Not only did she touch hearts through her unique voice, but through her dance moves on stage. Her ‘Cumbia Spins’ are what inspired her fans to get out on the dance floor and dance to the beat of her passionate songs.
Selena also had a very strong impact on women globally. During the 90’s, young girls of color were insecure about their ethnicity and background; what made them who they are. However, Selena burst those walls of insecurities down through her confidence in her music and her style. She was extremely influential through her fashion statements such as her bedazzled bustier, high waisted pants, her iconic purple jumpsuit, and more makeup looks.
At Charter, students are still reminded and live with the legacy Selena has left behind. Sophomore James Gayoso describes his home life as “always having Selena playing. My mom loves her and she eventually grew on me and my sister.”
As the years go by and more artists drop music, Selena’s influence never dies. Her poise, compassion, and talent that she carried with her throughout her life is what makes her a shining star. A star whose glow will never fade and will only shine stronger as time passes.
