Cuba loses power

Over the past few weeks, Cuba has experienced a massive blackout that has had horrific consequences for the people and economy. On Oct. 17, a nationwide stay-at-home order was put into effect to conserve power for all non-essential workers, but to no avail, the power went down nationwide the next day.

This resulted from the collapse of one of the biggest power stations in the nation, the Antonio Guiteras. The station was reportedly built poorly in the late 80s, with low-quality control, cut corners, and bad equipment. As the week stretched on, Cubans have been without air conditioning, refrigeration for food and light, and the economy has been crippled. The Cuban government blames it on the years of American trade embargos.

North Korea Joins Russo-Ukraine War

After a grueling two years of fighting to take Ukraine, the Russian military has been spread thin, unexpectedly repelled by the Ukrainian defenses, relying on military mercenary groups such as the Wagner Group, which even staged a rebellion against the Russian government earlier last year. However, as the war goes on, both sides have grown weary; Russia is bringing in backup from the most cut-off country in the world: North Korea.

Videos of North Korean soldiers leaving their home country for the first time in the world, armed with Russian rifles and uniforms have been spread across the internet. NATO confirmed on Oct. 28th that up to 10,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to the battlefields in Ukraine.

Trump Works at McDonald’s

The 2024 election looms near, with both candidates attempting to gain as much positive publicity as possible before Nov. 5th. Former President Donald Trump, after claiming that his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, did not ever work at Mcdonald's, decided to make a video where he worked the fryers at McDonalds and served customers in an attempt to make himself seem more relatable to the average American. Although there was controversy over the fact that the incident was staged, it had its desired effect, gaining a politician’s most valuable resource: publicity.

Elon Musk Funds Election Registration Giveaways

Recently, multibillionaire Elon Musk has been holding raffle giveaways of 1 million USD to anyone who registers to vote in a swing state—as well as one more vague condition: “be a spokesperson for the petition” to protect free speech rights and gun laws. Although the latter is a more conservative value, neither of those pledges binds anyone to anything.

It’s no secret that Musk has been trying to get people to vote for former President Donald Trump, having described himself as “dark gothic MAGA,” although what that means remains to be seen. Although his raffle doesn’t require anyone to vote for a specific candidate, the US Department of Justice has warned Musk that his raffle may violate federal law by putting out bribes regarding an election, and the Philadelphia Defense Attorney is filing a lawsuit against Musk for the same reason.

Flooding in Spain

On Monday, Oct. 28, massive downpours flooded many areas in Eastern Spain. In several places, several months worth of rain fell all in one day. Throughout the east, the rain spilled out of canals and ditches, unable to be contained, and caused massive floods. Rescue personnel jumped into action, traveling in boats to save survivors. So far, most of the damage has occurred in the city of Valencia, where homes, roads, and train tracks were severely damaged or wiped away entirely, and over 155,000 people lost power. As of now, the death toll sits at 90.
