As Veterans Day is on November 11th, Charter’s American Red Cross club decided to host an activity on November 1st where their members and other students were able to create cards which expressed gratitude to Veterans. The American Red Cross club is a global humanitarian organization that helps in disaster aid and provides emergency assistance. The club strives to not only gain more members, but also raise awareness to their club and the organization as a whole.
It was only recently when the American Red Cross came up with this event. “We thought this would be a good idea to support [the Veterans] as [they] truly do a lot for our country, and we wanted to help show how grateful we are [of them],” says Sneha Matthews, Junior and Co-Vice president of the club. As the American Red Cross organization fully supports the mission of helping and advocating for humanitarian values, Matthews feels that they were able to showcase just that. Additionally, any of the members that were there could earn club and workshop hours which not only demonstrates their efforts but also helps them meet their requirements for the year.
During their workshop event, the board members all brought different materials that would’ve been needed to create the cards. This consisted of supplies such as construction paper, crayons, and even stickers. With materials like this, the students were able to portray their creativity using drawings, colors, or anything they felt expressed their gratitude toward the Veterans. “Making the cards was a good way to show appreciation towards Veterans because many people forget about the day,” states Isabella Serrano, Red Cross Secretary.
After the activity, Matthews reiterated the project’s significance: “We will be sending them to the larger American Red Cross organization, and then from there, they will distribute them to hospitals and facilities with veterans.” This step highlights the club’s collaborative spirit and ensures that each card reaches those who need it the most. Each card essentially carries a message of thanks and appreciation, turning personal efforts into a united show of support.
The club’s initiative to create Veteran cards is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served in the military. This project encouraged thoughtful conversations and reflection, ultimately bridging the gap between Veterans and the broader community. Through meaningful actions, the American Red Cross club exemplifies the importance of recognizing and honoring our Veterans, ensuring their stories are heard and appreciated.
