For generations, political violence has been a recurring theme within our nation. The attack on the U.S capital, racial violence, and the recent assassination attempts on former president Donald Trump are just a few of the many brunt attacks that represent our corrupt politics. Taking action, PPCHS’s Political Youth Club has re-emerged after two years to spread awareness.
Though in the 2023-2024 school year, Political Youth was not running, Seniors Isabella Laverde and Allison Montesdeoca decided to take charge in reigniting the club’s motive. Laverde confidently stated, “We believed Political Youth was the perfect opportunity for future activists, politicians, and world-leaders to make a change in Pembroke Pines.” She further explained how this idea was what paved the way for the club’s purpose and goals.
Communications Director, Robertza Joseph, expressed how the reemergence of the Political Youth club will benefit students by increasing awareness and accuracy in politics; “I feel like it’s important now more than ever for students to be aware and educated about our local government.” Expanding on her point, the Junior mentions the recent phone ban in schools, which was passed strictly in Broward County. The passing of this bill, “Affected many students’ daily lives. So, our club’s aim is to help students become more involved with the government and its processes.”
As the club encourages students to become more active in the community, Political Youth plans to host local beach and park clean ups, food drives, and more. Co-President Laverde explained how Political Youth also plans on partnering with other clubs that have similar goals, such as Jags for Justice to “Fulfill the mission of our club.” By continuously attending the events that the City of Pembroke Pines hosts, the club will soon enough be on its way to success.
Embodying Political Youth’s purpose, Robertza further commented on her thoughts on political violence; “I feel like education is the biggest force to go against this. When people are faced with something unknown to them, they may get angry which causes the violence.” Unfortunately, with the upcoming election, American citizens have grown to be aggressive towards each other in the rival political parties.
Proposing a solution, Laverde stated “Being both kind and passionate lays the foundation for peace, security, and justice.” Though this may seem minor, this idea is incredibly impactful as it pertains to decreasing violence in the government. Overall, PPCHS’s renewed Political Youth club is back and prepared to improve Charter as a whole.
