In times of despair, sometimes all people need is something that brings a smile to their faces. From September 23rd to 27th, the National Honor Society (NHS) and National Art Honor Society (NAHS) dedicated themselves to spreading peace in Pembroke Pines. From decorating sleeve cups to hanging banners, many people will be touched by the hospitality of these club members.
Coffee sleeve decorating
To send out kind messages, NHS and NAHS collaborated to decorate coffee sleeves, which will be given to a local Starbucks. Members from both clubs wrote inspiring messages on the sleeves to make a lasting impression on those who got the sleeves. “I thought it was pretty fun. It was cool how we were able to spread peace while doing something that was enjoyable with friends,” junior Meghan Chin states. The sleeves will soon be seen throughout Pembroke Pines to commemorate a special week. Junior Brianna Chin additionally adds on, “It was really fun being able to help spread peace in ways that will make others and ourselves happy.”
Chalk 4 Peace
Throughout the week, members left encouraging art pieces on the sidewalks of their communities with chalk to visualize what Peace Week means to them. This activity brought communities together because of its family-friendly activity and helped younger kids discover what it means to be kind and to spread love to those who need it.
Peace Week Banner
Bringing the week to a close, NHS members created a banner with affectionate Post-it notes that were shaped into a peace sign to symbolize what this week was all about. Phrases like “You are strong!” and “Be who you are!” are seen throughout the banner to show that nobody is alone and that there is always hope. Junior Kaitlyn Oramas noted, “I loved working behind the scenes such as making the banner, but what I loved most of all is that everyone was able to get together and spread positive messages to their classmates.” This banner was hung in the cafeteria for all students and staff to see; it continues to stand out and brings awareness to what little acts of kindness and simple sayings can do to a person.
For a week filled with love and joy, NHS and NAHS had events that made students remember what they all need and to give: peace. Members of both Honor Societies will continue to spread the message in hope that it will reach the hearts of many who have been affected by violence.
