Charter is known for having many clubs, one being Model United Nations (Model UN). This club includes two main events: General Assembly (GA) and Crisis. The General Assembly is where each person in the committee room is a delegate that represents a country. Crisis however, includes a creative approach, where each delegate represents a character that is part of a fantasy world. Essentially, both of these events discuss their issue, their perspectives, and create alliances to provide solutions.
It was just last school year when Model UN announced what is now known to be JAGMUN. This event will mark Charter’s first ever Model UN conference. “We named the conference JAGMUN as other conferences typically name theirs based on their mascot with “MUN” at the end,” senior and coordinator Aarohi Bali reveals.
This event was a two day conference, which was held on Charter grounds on September 14-15th. Additionally, other schools in Broward such as Cypress Bay, Nova, and North Broward Preparatory school were able to attend. “We were so excited to finally see JAGMUN come to life after rigorously preparing for it since March. The conference went better than expected for it being the first iteration,” Bali excitedly exclaimed.
The fictional world the members chose for the Crisis event was Percy Jackson, calling it the ‘Percy Jackson Committee of Crisis.’ Participants from all schools followed Model UN events, but also they collaborated, took notes, and debated within their committees. For instance, the group combating Kronos were trying to conquer the world again, while also finding ways to increase food security in the United Nations Human Rights Council of GA and addressing the proliferation of chemical weapons in the Disarmament and International Security Committee as well.
After hours of hard work, each of the committees were recognized at the closing ceremony in which speeches were made and awards were given. Overall, both the delegates and chairs (judges) all “Reported positive feedback due to the supportive atmosphere,” Bali explained. Because of their success, not only does Model UN hope for more conferences in the future, but also they can confidently say “It was a JAGMUN to be remembered.”
