From murder mysteries to romance, this era of released anime films includes something for anyone. Not only have there been a couple of new seasons of returning series, but most are reaching incredible heights in popularity.
Oshi No Ko Season 2 [Trailer][OP]
Adapted from the 2020 manga by Aka Akasaka, “Oshi No Ko” quickly grew into a worldwide phenomenon. It currently stands as the third most-watched airing anime and second most-watched anime from this era of anime shows. The show follows a doctor and his patient, who reincarnate into the lives of their favorite singer’s children, which pivots into a murder mystery after the singer’s death. The rest of the show follows the mystery of her murder and the children’s breakthrough in the entertainment industry.
The level of art in the show isn’t replicated by any of the other films currently airing, besides Alya Sometimes Hides her Feelings in Russian, animated by the same studio, Doga Kobo. The characters are all incredibly well-developed and intriguing as well; they’re the best part of the show. They have captivating arcs and interactions. The show is also an interesting analysis of the Japanese entertainment industry, touching on the toll it takes on celebrities and performers, the toxicity, and the complex dynamics between crew members. If someone is an anime fan who likes intrigue and mystery or is interested in the entertainment industry, “Oshi No Ko” Season 2 is something to watch.
Wistoria: Wand and Sword [Trailer][OP]
With “Wistoria” being one of the most followed shows this season, it’s one of the few major shonen (action-adventure) anime currently streaming. It’s another typical European-themed magic-school anime, similar to other recent hits like “Mashle.” However, instead of opting for a more comedic route, “Wistoria” opts for a more serious tone. The story follows the main character, Will, during his challenges as a student who can’t use magic in a magic school.
The animation is incredible, the character designs are extremely unique, and the fight scenes are fast-paced and exciting. For a shonen anime, the fight scenes are often a focal point, and “Wistoria” doesn’t miss. It’s full of flashy swordplay and cool abilities, giving it an edge over many of the other similar anime. If someone is interested in magic, high fantasy, or fight scenes, “Wistoria” is an anime for them.
My Deer Friend Nokotan [Trailer][OP]
There’s no way to describe “My Deer Friend Nokotan” without confusing the listener. The story follows a former-delinquent-turned-model-student’s interactions with a girl who’s part deer. The show does have some confusing moments; however, there’s no denying that the show is quite funny. It’s packed full of pop culture references and cutaway gags.
The tone of the show is also something that people may find surprising. The intro and theme would make viewers think it’s just another slice-of-life anime clone, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Interestingly, “Nokotan” was animated by Wit Studio, who also worked on massive series like “Attack on Titan.”
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian [Trailer][OP]
“Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian” is another one of the most watched titles of this summer’s anime season, mostly stealing the third-place spot on the MyAnimeList seasonal rankings. The story follows the main character, Kuze, and his interactions throughout the school and student council. The show also focuses on his relationship with his love interest, Alisa. Being half Russian, Alisa will often start speaking Russian with no context, voicing her opinions aloud in a language she thinks no one else understands. Unbeknownst to her, Kuze understands Russian well, and can understand all of the things she says, especially about him.
I did not enjoy the show that much compared to others. It’s a passable anime for someone interested in mediocre comedy or cliche romance plotlines. The main characters, Kuze and Alya, feel extremely bland and don’t have much personality or development through the series thus far. However, the show has one aspect that puts it a rank above most traditional slice-of-life stories: its animation. Animated by Doga Kobo, the series looks fantastic in every scene. Backgrounds are drawn beautifully, character designs are simple, yet memorable, and the art style is impeccable. If you don’t have anything better to watch, “Alya” may be a fine choice for someone interested in quality animation, or someone who just really appreciates slice-of-life or romance anime.
Upcoming Anime
Some of the most anticipated anime of the year are coming out in the next few months as well. “Dandadan” is set to release on October 4th, 2024, which has been looked forward to by fans of the manga for a very long time now. Re:Zero will return for a third season on October 2nd, which will begin with a 90 minute special, and “Blue Lock” Season 2 returns on the 5th. Likewise, “Chainsaw Man: Reze-hen,” “One Punch Man” Season 3, “Mushoku Tensei III,” and “Jujutsu Kaisen” Season 3 are all big upcoming titles that have been announced this summer.
Overall, this anime season is filled with all sorts of different series that each appeal to different audiences. Even if anime isn’t someone’s forte, it may be worth it to give one of these shows a chance. If perhaps none of the listed shows caught your eye, there are still plenty of other anime out right now that may interest you.
