As the sounds of upbeat salsa and slow-tempo bachata filled the atmosphere, the PPCHS community immediately knew that Latin Dance was back. The iconic “La Familia” returns with a year full of exciting events, clinics, and tryouts being held on August 29th and 30th.
After “Not thinking much of it,” senior Fabiana Roca, discovered her “Love for Latin dancing that she didn’t really know of” through the club. She is now entering her third year with the club and is this year’s captain. After having the team being passed down to her, she “Hopes to make more experiences with new people and to continue to have fun!”
Alongside Roca, she will have two assistant captains: Senior Paola Bastidas and Junior Natalia Sarria. The trio worked “Long and hard by applying what they had learned in classes they took during the summer,” says Bastidas to create this year’s dance for tryouts.
Out of the fifty students trying out, only thirty-thirty-six members will be selected to be a part of “La Familia.” To prepare for these tryouts, students learned and practiced each and every step of the 2 required choreographies. Each day of clinics brought a large mixture of smiles and laughter on all the student’s faces. Valeria Perez even exclaims, “Not only [did I have] fun with [my] friends, [but I] also got to connect with [my] Hispanic culture.”
As this new team slowly begins their year, Roca hopes that the new and returning members will “Find the same passion for Latin dance” that she has. She also wishes that they carry on the club’s legacy after she graduates.
“La Familia” will debut their club this year during the fall pep rally in October. Just based on previous years, many students outside the club have high hopes for a good year. With a team full of new faces and many events to come, Latin dance has officially returned.
