Many Jags find themselves trying to stay on top of their studying, but it can be overwhelming to balance coursework and revision while managing stress. Despite these challenges, every student has their own unique methods to guarantee them success during the final months of the school year. Here are some tips to get through the fourth quarter and ace your exams:
Find your study method
Finding your ideal study method can be a game-changer when it comes to end-of-year exams. Try different techniques to discover what works best for you. Whether it’s making flashcards, or revising notes, experimenting with different methods of studying can help make the process more enjoyable and less stressful. Consider incorporating pictures and diagrams, if you’re a visual learner, or listen to someone explain topics to you, if you’re an auditory learner. “I like to use active recall, so I look over my notes, set them aside, and then try to recall what I just said,” shares PPCHS sophomore Janice Chung. Remember that the best study method for you is one that keeps you motivated and leads to good results.
Form a study group
When it comes to testing, studying with a group can prove to be very effective. Some benefits of studying with a group are learning things from different perspectives that are easier for you to understand, being able to collectively think with your peers, and clarifying each other’s doubts. “I prefer studying with a study group because I find it easier to remember information for an exam when I can ask questions and collaborate with other students,” expresses senior Janessa Montilla. When studying by yourself, it’s easy to become unmotivated or bored, but groups help you stay on track and have energy to be able to process the information.
Balance your time; don’t wait until the last minute
As we are in the fourth quarter, it becomes easier to procrastinate and leave all your studying for the last minute, which sounds like a good idea until you regret it the day of your test. When you have multiple classes to study for, it’s important to balance and space apart your studying to successfully understand each course to the fullest to get excellent marks on your exam. Junior Hannah Flores comments, “The best thing to do is to spread out your studying and work on it little by little so you’re able to fit everything in.” There are many ways to balance your work, but it’s important to get everything done in a timely manner and so that you understand all the information.
Maintain a consistent study schedule
With so many different tests to study for, it’s important to have a consistent study schedule to ensure your success in these exams. Some ways to create a schedule are by making goals for yourself, limiting distractions, and taking breaks to avoid burnouts. “I balance my time by using a calendar. I like to set aside specific times for each class. If I have more time on certain days, I’ll study my harder classes on those days. If I’m feeling tired one day, I’ll study for my easier classes on those days, so I’m not too exhausted,” explains senior Janessa Montilla. Calendars are useful because they help you set small goals for yourself each day that are flexible around your schedule and help you learn a lesson little by little before all the testing of quarter four piles up on you. Remember not to burn yourself out and study a little bit each day to ensure success on your exams.
Helpful tips for AICE and AP
Studying for AICE and AP exams can be challenging, especially due to the rigorous nature of these classes. However, there are many tips to make sure you pass these tests. “Read the textbooks and watch AP videos while taking notes on the most important concepts,” recommends sophomore Faith Banossian. College Board offers a large selection of videos curated especially for AP exams and many online videos can be found to help you focus on specific topics. For AICE exams, knowing how to structure your answers is crucial. “If you know what the graders are looking for and what little things will get you points, it will be much easier for you to score higher,” explains junior Hannah Flores.
Managing stress
Testing season often comes with loads of stress for many students. Remember that this stress is only temporary, and make sure you are getting plenty of sleep, taking enough breaks, and prioritizing your mental health. It can also be beneficial to practice mindful techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, and listening to calming music. “It’s hard to get rid of the stress, but I just tell myself that I’ll be able to learn everything on time if I just take it little by little,” conveys junior Diedra Pabon.
Follow these helpful tips, and testing season will be over before you know it. Just remember to prioritize yourself and take it day by day. Soon, you’ll be able to enjoy summer and leave the fourth quarter stress behind.
