Just last night the most anticipated game for the Varsity Jags this season opened up. Taking home a massive win against short time rivals St. Thomas Aquinas, the Jaguars added another W to their 4 game winning streak.
Walking onto raider territory, senior Jeremy Elyzee felt confident in himself, leading him to ball out an explosive 21 points. “During the game I felt all the mixed emotions not just with me, [but with] my teammates as well. We knew we had to end the game off strong.”
Emotions ran high as the Jaguars were down 5 at the half. A back and forth first half of great runs from both sides of the court defined this game; at one point, the Jags were trailing by 15. The loud and aggressive student section blared at the guys. Taking a personal approach, Sammy Mitchell, a 2 way athlete transfer from St. Thomas knew coming into this game that it was going to be a difficult one. But they had to win.
Mitchell made a huge corner 3 that started the comeback run for the Jaguars. “We can’t lose, we can’t,” Mitchell shouted to his fellow teammates. Committed Joshie Harris thrived in the 4th quarter, giving the Jaguars 28 points and himself an opportunity to break his record high 29 points this season. Dominating the 4th quarter, the Jags only allowed the Raiders to score 8; they gained momentum and maintained an aggressive defense going into overtime.
The Jaguars ended overtime with pressing and dominating steals and with an impressive zero turnovers. After netting 13 points in overtime and shattering the 7-0 run from the Raiders, it’s more than likely this much-anticipated match up will recur in the playoffs.
