The defending Big 8 5A state champion Jags continue to fight to defend their championship. On Thursday February 10, the Jags took on the Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks with a final score of 83-74. Junior Kolby King led the Jags in scoring with 26 while other juniors Geoffrey Sprouse and Elijah Wyche both had 16 points. With this win the Jags are now riding a two game winning streak and now have an 8-3 record. After this win the Jags are ranked number three is that state of Florida class 5A rankings.

Riding a two game win streak, the Jags headed to a neutral sight to take on the Boyd Anderson Cobras for the district championship. The Cobras got out to a hot start and took a 14 point lead over the Jags. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Jags closed the gap but the Cobras still led by two with a score of 32-30. The defending champs lived up to their name and outscored the Cobras 28-8 in the final quarter to win the game 58-40. Junior guard Geoffrey Sprouse said, “It feels great to be one of the best teams but as a team we have to stay humble and not let the wins get to our heads.”

Headed into their next game, the Jags were the favorite as they head in with an 8-3 record. Justin DeLuca said, “The basketball team should win the championship because they are the best team in the state.” With the state championship on the line the Jags will look to their big three, Kolby King, Geoffrey Sprouse, and Elijah Wyche, to lead the team.

In their first state championship playoff game, the Jags dominated against Jensen Beach winning the game 69-42. Kolby King led the way for the Jags as their leading scorer after he dropped 25 points. The Jags played great in the first half but started to pull away in the second half, out scoring Jensen Beach by 24 points. The Jags have taken control of class 5A and they don’t plan on giving up that control anytime soon.

Now, their present game against Miami Norland on Friday, February 26, 2021 at 7:00pm, is center stage. As a season of success carries them forward, how will the Jags handle this coming challenge — and how far could a potential win take them now?
