After a long year full of unexpected turns, artists didn’t stop doing what they do, making music to lift their fans’ spirits as they continue through quarantine. From new faces to anticipated returns, fans definitely had themselves another successful year in music. The success here was spread out, streaming from various genres, reaching all the way from Rap artists such as Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Baby, to smooth RnB tunes such as The Weeknd and new up and coming artist Giveon. With that being said, here are our picks for the albums of the year in some of music’s major genres.

One of the more notable drops this year was popular Rap artist Lil Uzi Vert’s “Eternal Atake”. The aspect that makes this album one of the most unique of the year is that this album was actually supposed to be dropped much sooner. Uzi pushed back the release multiple times due to the album getting leaked not once, but twice. Uzi and Rap fans all around were most excited and it was definitely worth the wait, especially with songs like “P2,” which is the second coming of one of Uzi’s most popular songs, “XO Tour Life” which dropped in 2017. Additionally, another song, “Myron,” which dropped on the deluxe, was an interesting story in itself, as it was leaked prior to the release and even became viral on TikTok. This album was definitely special to Charter students especially, as it dropped exactly in the middle of 3rd period. Other significant drops include Lil Baby’s “My Turn” and Polo G’s “The GOAT.” Overall, the rap game stepped up and showed out for their most loyal fans.

As for RnB, the long-awaited return of The Weeknd blew fans away. Unfortunately, his album “After Hours” did not make our top RnB album of the year, as one of the newer artists, Giveon, might’ve stolen RnB fans’ hearts with his debut album, “Take Time.” Giveon did not burst into the scene until May 2020, which was 2 months after his album dropped. This was from his feature on Drake’s viral hit, “Chicago Freestyle.” After this release, Drake fans, as well as RnB fans in general fell in love with Giveon’s unique sound, especially from the song’s “World We Created” and “Favorite Mistake.” This was not the only feeling that his album was able to portray. Songs like “Heartbreak Anniversary” and “Like I Want You” found fans laying in bed, staring at their ceilings and letting their hearts out. As if there wasn’t substantial RnB music being dropped this year, Bryson Tiller returned after 5 years, dropping “ANNIVERSARY.” RnB fans were truly blessed with tons of music to stir up their emotions this year.

Other genres like Pop and Latin had their own fair share of great drops this year, such as Harry Styles “Fine Line” and Latin star Bad Bunny’s “YHLQMDLG.” This year’s music releases were exactly what the world needed to get their minds off reality. No matter what kind of music that you enjoy, it is safe to say that more lyrics were memorized, playlists were added to libraries, and more fans from across the country were born.
