In 2016, first-year head coach Adam Gase led the Dolphins to a 10-6 record and led them to the playoffs for the first time in eight years. With this early success, Dolphins fans thought they found the guy to resurrect this once historic franchise. Fast forward four years, the Dolphins never returned to the playoffs, never had a season above .500, and they have an entirely new team. Coach Adam Gase was fired and replaced with Brian Flores and quarterback Ryan Tannehill was sent to Tennessee and now Ryan Fitzpatrick is the starter.

At nearly the midway point in the season, the Dolphins have a 3-3 record and are ranked number two in their division. In this year’s draft, the Dolphins used the number five pick in order to bring in Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. After five weeks Tua had still never been off the bench, but late into their game against the New York Jets, the rookie made his first appearance.

Late in a 24-0 blowout of the Jets, the rookie was given the task to close out the game for the Dolphins. Even with an almost empty stadium, the cheer of the fans echoed throughout. On his first few plays, he was the first person from either team to convert a third down. Shortly after the game, the Dolphins made a shocking statement when they benched starter Ryan Fitzpatrick so that Tua would be the starter for week eight.

This decision shocked Fitzpatrick and Dolphins fans because Tua had taken very few snaps and the Dolphins started to win with Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Student Devin Epstein said, “Fitzpatrick was a great player but I think Tua will bring something new to the offense for the better.” The departure of Tom Brady from the Patriots caused a shake in the division because now the Bills are number one with the Dolphins are number two. After their win against the Jets, it seemed like the Dolphins were gaining positive momentum.

With only a 3-3 record the Dolphins have a 31-13 win over the Jaguars, 43-17 win over San Francisco, and a 24-0 win over the Jets. At this point in the season, the Dolphins are ranked eighth in the AFC and are currently in the hunt for a playoff spot. Owen Galvin stated, “I think it’s too early to start Tua we should wait till week 10.” So far the Dolphins have been pretty average and are not leaders in any major stat categories but they are still good enough to compete with the top teams.
