Sugar-Spun Melodies
October 16, 2020
The poem “Sugar-Spun Melodies” by Brianna de la Paz is inspired by none other the painting above, Autumn in Bavaria. For years prior to 1908, Wassily Kandinsky had been painting landscapes in a highly stylized manner. With ‘Autumn in Bavaria,’ however, he would push it farther towards pure abstraction than at any time previously. “Sugar-Spun Melodies” is a sweet and uplifting poem we here at the CHAT hope you enjoy! Sugar-Spun Melodies
By Brianna de la Paz
Afternoon light hangs low in the sky,
humming a tune into the air
and brushing yellow petals from their stems.
An accordionist stands on the old pathway
feathered softly with fallen leaves.
He stretches the instrument between his fingers
and folds it into itself again,
molding the bellows like pulled sugar
in a warm candy shop.
A honeyed melody drips from his song,
landing tenderly on the maple leaves below.
He watches with wrinkled eyes
as the wind blows wishes,
carrying crystals of candied music
through empty city streets.
They drift from corner to corner,
leaving faint harmonies
and whispers of cinnamon
on glowing doorsteps
of the unknown.
